Upper cannonball Manure management project

The Cannonball River Watershed Manure Management EPA319 Project started in 2007 with a goal of reducing the amount of fecal coliform and improve grazing along the Cannonball River. The board for the Slope-Hettinger Soil Conservation District secured funds through EPA and the ND Department of Health to assist operators and landowners to install best management practices in order to reduce the fecal coliform entering the river system. This project ended November 30, 2011. This project has been completed through the assistance of Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Livestock Facility Assistance Program.

Implementation of these best management practices has reduced the fecal coliform in the river. This project has installed 2 complete waste management systems which have included waste storage ponds, access roads, dikes, diversions, etc to contain high nutrient run-off from livestock feeding areas. 1.3 miles of fencing, 1 well and 5.8 miles of pipeline, 17 acres of hayland planting and 1545 acres of prescribed grazing installed to encourage proper grazing distribution. Also has benefited the producers to utilize their manure properly when spreading on the cropland. The District hosted tours of these systems and conducted a grazing workshop to further the education of manure management.
